What Veldspan is
Veldspan is a pre-made mesh: horizontal high-tensile wires with vertical stay wires. It comes in compact 100 m rolls (50 m is also common). It is used for livestock, game, quarantine camps, and boundary fences.
Droppers are not counted on a Veldspan run. The stay wires hold the mesh upright. That is the main difference from a multi-strand fence built from fencing wire and droppers.
Heights and line counts
Quote the pattern, not a guess. Common stock patterns are 6-line 900 mm, 10-line 1190 mm, 13-line 1880 mm, 14-line 2110 mm, and 16-line 2410 mm. Vertical stay spacing is typically 150 mm or 300 mm. Finish is light galvanized or heavy galvanized.
Taller patterns are used more on game and boundary fences. Shorter patterns are typical for livestock camps. Tell us the height, line count, stay spacing, and how many 100 m rolls you need.
Posts, Y-stands, and wooden poles
A typical Veldspan layout uses straining posts (or thicker wooden poles) about every 100 m, with line supports about every 7.5 m. Line supports are Y-stands, or wooden poles as a cheaper alternative.
Steel posts are round poles for corners, ends, and straining points. They can be quoted with or without an overhang, with or without stays, galvanized or painted.
Wooden poles are typically CCA-treated gum poles. Common lengths are 1.8 m, 2.1 m, 2.4 m, 2.7 m, 3.0 m, and 3.6 m. Plant about 600 mm in the ground, so a 1.2 m fence usually takes 1.8 m poles. Use thicker poles at corners and straining points.
Binding wire and the rest of the range
Galvanized binding wire is the soft wire used to tie the mesh to Y-stands. Typical sizes are 1.6 mm and 2 mm. It is not the same as tensioned galvanized fencing wire.
Doringdraad (barbed wire) is optional on top or as a livestock line. It is sold as single strand or twisted double strand, in standard coils of about 35 kg / 845 m or 50 kg / 800 m. Quote metres or kilograms. The amount is rounded up to the next full coil. Fencing wire, droppers, and rebar droppers belong on multi-strand fences, not on a standard Veldspan count.
