Veldspan, doringdraad, or strand fence?

Veldspan: mesh in rolls

Veldspan is a hinge-joint mesh: horizontal line wires with vertical stay wires, sold in 100 m rolls. The stay wires hold the mesh, so no droppers are needed.

Straining posts or thick wooden poles go about every 100 m, with Y-stands or wooden line poles about every 7.5 m. Common patterns run from 6-line 900 mm to 16-line 2410 mm, with stays every 150 mm or 300 mm.

Strand fence: wire, Y-stands, and droppers

A strand fence is galvanized fencing wire pulled tight between straining posts. Y-stands support the lines between the posts, and droppers keep the wires spaced between the Y-stands. Soft galvanized binding wire ties the wires to the droppers and Y-stands.

Around 2.24 mm is a common farm line, in light or heavy galvanized. Droppers go about every 1 to 3 m. Y-stands are commonly about every 10 m, and wider on some cattle fences.

Doringdraad: barbed lines

Doringdraad is barbed wire, single strand or twisted double strand. Use it for one or more lines of a strand fence, or along the top of a Veldspan fence.

It is supplied in standard coils. A typical single-strand coil is around 35 kg / 845 m. A typical twisted coil is around 50 kg / 800 m. Quote the metres or kilograms you need. The order is rounded up to the next full coil.

Cattle

A strand fence is the usual choice for cattle. The cattle layout in our fencing calculator is 1.2 m high with 7 wires, straining posts up to 200 m apart, Y-stands every 25 m, and droppers every 3 m. Doringdraad can replace one or more of the plain lines. Veldspan also works if you want a mesh.

Goats and sheep

Goats and sheep push through gaps between strands, so a mesh works better. Use Veldspan, and choose 150 mm stays for smaller openings than 300 mm stays. A line of doringdraad along the top is optional.

Game

Game fences are taller. The game layout in our fencing calculator is a strand fence 2.4 m high with 21 wires, straining posts every 100 m, Y-stands every 10 m, and droppers every 1 m. Tall Veldspan patterns (13-line 1880 mm, 14-line 2110 mm, and 16-line 2410 mm) are the mesh option.
